Soil Conservation

The Agricultural Service Board is responsible for administering the Alberta Soil Conservation Act to prevent the deterioration of agricultural lands. If your land is experiencing soil erosion a Soil Conservation Notice can be issued that will outline remedial measures to be taken.

Due to the high winds common in our area agricultural lands are highly susceptible to soil erosion. Reduced tillage and improved agricultural practices have decreased this risk in recent years but producers should always be vigilant. Once erosion begins there are few options in reducing its impact. Besides the permanent loss of fertility, soil erosion can also have legal implications if the soil affects other properties or reduces visibility on roadways.
