The next municipal election is Monday, October 18, 2021. Nominations can be filed as early as Monday, January 4, 2021, and the Nomination Period will close at 12 noon on September 20, 2021.

NOMINATION FORM:
All potential candidates are responsible for filing nomination papers must do so by filling in the form below.  Each candidate must have 10 signatures from people eligible to vote within Foothills County.  Please ensure that you sign in front of a Foothills County employee who is a Commissioner of Oaths, this will be arranged when you make an appointment to file your nomination papers.

NOMINATION FEE:
Council has recently passed a Bylaw, that all nominations must be accompanied by a $500 nomination deposit.  The returning officer shall require the deposit to be provided by way of cash, certified cheque, money order, debit card or credit card;

Section 30(2) of the Local Authorities Election Act, being Chapter L-21, Revised Statues of Alberta, 2000 and amendments thereto, the candidate’s deposit shall be returned to the candidate (a) if the candidate is declared elected (b) if the candidate obtains a number of votes at least equal to ½ of the total number of votes cast for the candidate elected to the office with the least number of votes or (c) if the candidate withdraws as a candidate in accordance with section 32; Section 30(3) of the Local Authorities Election Act, being Chapter L-21, Revised Statues of Alberta, 2000 and amendments thereto, if a candidate dies before the closing of the voting stations on election day, the sum deposited by the candidate shall be returned to the candidate’s estate;

Section 30(4) of the Local Authorities Election Act, being Chapter L-21, Revised Statues of Alberta, 2000 and amendments thereto, if a candidate does not obtain the number of votes described in subsection (2) (b), the deposit shall be paid into the general revenue of the local jurisdiction for which the deposit requirement has been established;

CHANGES TO THE ACT:

Recent changes to the Local Authorities Election Act came into effect on September 1, 2020. A summary of these changes can be found in the information sheet from Alberta Municipal Affairs.

SIGNAGE – LAND USE BYLAW REQUIREMENTS:
Section 4.2.1.39

Campaign signs for Federal, Provincial, Municipal, Regional Health Authority or School Board elections on private property, to a maximum of one (1) sign per lot provided that:

  1. Such signs are removed within seven (7) days after the election. Candidates must ensure that the site is returned to its previous condition; and
  2. The consent of the property owner or occupant is obtained prior to the signs being placed.

General Municipal Election Workers
Job Posting (Short term / Casual)

Foothills County is currently seeking workers for the Monday, October 18, 2021, general municipal election and accepting applications for the following positions:

Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO)
o Responsible for organizing and supervising the voting station and staff;
o Answering questions and ensuring election processes are followed;
o Ensuring proper closing of the voting stations;
o Returning ballot boxes and materials to Foothills County Office at the end of the night.

Deputy Returning Officer (DRO)
o Assist the Presiding Deputy Returning Officer;
o Setting up voting stations;
o Assisting voters with the registration process;
o Issuing ballots;
o Ensuring proper closing of the voting stations.

Front Door Greeters
o Greeting voters;
o Ensuring that voters are at the correct voting station and re-direct as required; must be able to read a Municipal Map to provide the best assistance
o Direct voters and answer questions;
o Available to assist the PDRO and DRO when needed;
o Help to sanitize voting stations.
Joint applications for established teams (PRDO & DRO) will also be considered

Qualifications:
• 18 years of age or older;
• Strong customer service along with the ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public;
• For all positions, prior election experience will be considered an asset but not a requirement as training will be provided;
• Strong communication, mathematic and comprehension skills;
• Ability to perform repetitive tasks and work long hours;
• Good attention to detail, ability to adhere to directions and learn in a short period of time.

** Applicants must be available to work Election Day, Monday October 18, 2021. Approximate hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. or until the votes have been counted. In addition, a half day training session in September will be mandatory, with final training date(s) being shared with successful applicants**
